Levels Common Questions

What is covered in each level?

Orientation is required prior to attending level 1 and is offered via an online video.  If this format does not work for you, we may have other options.

Level 1

In level 1  we build you up for success by forming a strong foundation.  When you pass level 1 your pup will be able to sit and lie down in front of you and at your side when given hand signals and verbal cues.  They will also be able to hold eye contact when requested.

Level 2

Level 2 begins our adventure in leash skills by creating attention when on-leash and learning our “let’s walk” cue.  Come when called is an important skill for all puppies to have, this level puts a focus on practicing recalls at a short distance with distractions.  We begin to work on impulse control with learning to wait at doorways, getting in and out of the car, and linking it together with a strong recall.

Level 3

This level continues to challenge you and your puppy by adding to the skills learned in the lower levels.  Here we increase the distance of our recalls, up difficulty with wait by adding in food distractions as well as take it and drop it cues, and leash skills by upping distractions.  We also put a big focus on stay with duration and distance practice.

Level 4

If you are interested in taking the AKC Canine Good Citizen test this level will complete your preparation.  In this level, we take our leash skills to a new height by teaching our “with me” cue.  We make stays and recalls even harder by layering the 3 D’s: duration, distance, and distractions.  And we learn 2 new position changes: stand &  settle.

Level 5

We see level 5 as our bonus level!  This one takes what we have learned so far to a new and exciting place. We practice stays on objects, learn fun cues like around, under, & over.  We also put a focus on mat work in this class with our “park it” cue.

Q & A:

But wait there aren’t any start dates, how will I know what to do or expect if there is no week 1?  Don’t worry, our video orientation will provide you with all of the information you need to succeed

What if I need to miss a week?  Summer is coming up and my family always vacations for a week once school is out, are there make-up sessions?  No need for make-up sessions, you can miss a week of training and pick up right where you left off when you return!

How do I know what level I start in? Everyone begins at level 1 regardless of what their previous training history is.  We want to make sure that each and every dog and human team experiences the same success as they move through the levels.  If you and your puppy have previous training experience it only means you will move through the levels faster!

How do I know when I have completed a level?  At the beginning of each level, you are given a goal checklist, once your trainer sees that you and your puppy can easily check off each goal they will approve you to move on to the next level.

What if I move up a level and feel I need a little more training at the previous level again?  No problem!  You may attend as many sessions per week as you wish, not only in your current level but in any lower level as well!

What about off leash play?  While watching puppies play is awfully cute it is not the true purpose of off leash time in class.  We have off leash time so that you and your puppy can practice in the face of the biggest distraction: another puppy!  Some play will take place but that is only so we can ensure your pup is doing well with their social skills.  We encourage you and your classmates to get together outside of class for playdates.

What is the average time spent in each level?  As we see each human and dog team as individuals we encourage everyone to work at their own pace.  However, our levels are designed so that the average time spent working them is 3-5 weeks.

What if I sign up for the 2-month package and a few weeks in I decide to upgrade, is that an option?  Of course!  2 weeks before your enrollment period is up we email you with upgrading options.
