Walk This Way Week 2

Tuck in/Heel position

Now that we have learned how to reinforce our dog for attention on a leash and walking at our pace we can begin our tuck in or heel training.  This walking method is ideal for crossing streets, getting through high traffic areas, and moving our dogs out of the way of faster traffic like runners and bicyclists.  I use the word ‘Side” for tucking my dog in on my right side and the word “Flip” for tucking them in on my left side.  You can use whatever words you are comfortable with as long as you are consistent with your dog.

Side-  Your dog is standing parallel at your right side.

Hand signal– right hand, closed fist with index finger extended, wave in a circular motion from in front of you outward to your right hip.

Step 1: With your dog out in front of you and food lure in your right hand, show food to the dog at nose level and slowly guide them along your right side as you step back with your right leg. Turn your hand around so that your dog turns around and step forward with your right foot when your dog’s nose is in line with your toes say “Yep” and food reward.  Repeat 6-9 times before moving on.

Step 2: Now to add the word; stand up straight and still and say “(dog’s name) side” then proceed to give the hand signal while luring your dog into the side position, as soon as the dog’s nose is in line with your toes say “yep” and food reward.  Repeat 3-6 times before moving on.

Step 3: Now let’s remove the food lure by asking your dog to side verbally “(dog’s name) side” followed by our hand signal (with no food) and as soon as the dog’s nose is in line with your toes “yep” and give a food reward.

Flip-  Your dog is standing parallel at your left side.

Hand signal– left hand, closed fist with index finger extended, wave in a circular motion from in front of you outward to your left hip.

Step 1: With your dog out in front of you and food lure in your left hand, show food to your dog at nose level and slowly guide them along your left side as you step back with your left leg. Turn your hand around so that your dog turns around and step forward with your left foot when your dog’s nose is in line with your toes say “Yep” and food reward.  Repeat 6-9 times before moving on.

Step 2: Now to add the word; stand up straight and still and say “(dog’s name) flip” then proceed to give the hand signal while luring your dog into flip position, as soon as the dog’s nose is in line with your toes say “yep” and food reward.  Repeat 3-6 times before moving on.

Step 3: Now let’s remove the food lure by asking your dog to flip verbally “(dog’s name) flip” followed by our hand signal (with no food) and as soon as the dog’s nose is in line with your toes say “yep” and give a food reward.
